Taiwanese Flutist Lin Hsiao-Feng Completes U.S. Tour and Performs at World Flute Society

The 2026 U.S. tour featured performances, lectures and cultural exchange, highlighting Taiwanese flute traditions, Paiwan nose flute and improvisation.

EAU CLAIRE, WI, UNITED STATES, August 24, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Taiwanese flutist Lin Hsiao-Feng has completed a 2026 U.S. tour featuring performances, lectures, and cultural exchanges focused on Taiwanese flute traditions, free improvisation, and contemporary cross-cultural music.

Lin, a Taiwanese improvising flutist and Music Director of Lin's Culture in Taipei, toured Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin with U.S.-based pianist and harpsichordist Hsuan Chang Kitano. Performing together as Cadenza Duo, the artists presented programs combining Taiwanese bamboo flutes, xiao, Paiwan nose flute traditions, piano, and real-time improvisation.

The tour concluded at the 2026 World Flute Society Annual Convention in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where Cadenza Duo appeared among the convention's Featured Evening Performers. Their performance explored connections between Taiwanese traditional instruments and contemporary improvisation.

During the convention, Lin also presented a lecture on Taiwan's Paiwan nose flute tradition, introducing its cultural background, musical characteristics, and contemporary significance to an international audience.

The World Flute Society convention brought together artists working across classical, jazz, world music, Indigenous traditions, improvisation, and contemporary performance. Lin participated in musical exchanges with flutists from different countries and musical backgrounds.

Cadenza Duo's convention performance also featured Canadian flutist and composer Ron Korb, a two-time Grammy Award nominee and the World Flute Society's 2026 World Flutist of the Year. The collaboration became one of several spontaneous musical exchanges that took place during the event.

Before arriving in Wisconsin, Lin and Kitano presented three events in Washington, D.C. These included a free improvisation performance at Rhizome DC, a lecture and musical presentation at JF Books, and a cultural performance at the Chinese American Museum DC.

At JF Books, the duo introduced Taiwanese bamboo flutes, xiao, and the Paiwan nose flute alongside piano and improvisation. At the conclusion of the event, they created an improvised piece inspired by the phrase "The wind has sound, freedom resonates," reflecting Cadenza Duo's ongoing exploration of real-time composition.

Throughout the U.S. tour, Lin focused on how Taiwanese flute traditions can enter contemporary and international performance contexts while retaining their cultural identity. His work brings traditional flute practices into dialogue with free improvisation, experimental sound, and cross-cultural collaboration.

Lin Hsiao-Feng is a Taiwanese improvising flutist, curator, and Music Director of Lin's Culture in Taipei. His work bridges Taiwanese and multi-ethnic flute traditions, free improvisation, experimental music, and interdisciplinary performance. In 2024, he was named World Flutist of the Year by the World Flute Society for his album Cadenza21 and was invited to perform at the Paris Cultural Olympiad.

Following his 2026 U.S. tour and appearance at the World Flute Society Annual Convention, Lin continues to develop international projects exploring Taiwanese flute traditions, improvisation, and cross-cultural musical exchange.
