Generations of Service: A First Sergeant Enlists His Daughter
Eighteen years ago, a young kid enlisted in the U.S. Army just hoping to survive his first contract. Today, that same Soldier is a First Sergeant, a father, and the proud anchor of a three-generation military legacy.
First Sergeant Hart’s career has been a steady climb. He rose from Specialist to Sergeant, and when he made Staff Sergeant, he made a choice: go into recruiting so other young people could get the same opportunities he had. He excelled, putting 15 to 20 people into the Army every year, before taking on the challenge of Station Commander to train and mentor new recruiters. Then "The List" came out, and it hit him—that kid who just wanted to make it through his first hitch was going to be a First Sergeant.
Yet, all the ranks and promotions pale in comparison to the day his oldest daughter came home, looked him in the eye, and said, “Dad, it’s my turn.”
Service is in the Hart family blood. Her grandfather put in 28 years in the Navy, and her dad is closing in on 20 years in the Army. Now, as a 17 year old high school senior, she is stepping up to become the third generation to wear the uniform. And she isn't taking the easy road—she successfully qualified for one of the most mentally demanding jobs in the entire military: Linguist.
"She is beyond excited and can’t wait to get going," 1SG Hart says. "A great student, musician, and athlete, she’s proof that our Army just keeps getting better."
Young people have a lot of options these days, and Ms. Hart is no exception. As the bass player and singer for the band The North, she has already written and recorded original music that is being streamed worldwide.
Every time a young American answer the call to serve, the whole country wins. But it is a uniquely proud day when a First Sergeant gets the rare honor of enlisting his own daughter, passing the torch and carrying a family tradition of service into its third generation.
